The local health care community is coming out with swing in the battle to keep fluoride in Arcata's drinking water, the question Arcata voters are being asked to resolve with Measure W in November.
In a news conference Thursday in the Arcata office of Dr. Ellen Mahoney, representatives of the California Nurses Association, Humboldt County Dental Society, Humboldt-Del Norte County Medical Society and other Six Rivers Dental Hygienist Association has declared their organizations' unequivocal support of fluoride and also opposition to Measure W.
"All good and no downside," was how Mahoney, the president of the Humboldt-Del Norte County Medical Society, summed up the effects of fluoride, calling it a "somewhat magic" preventive measure with implications for a number of other serious health concerns.
