Of course the best course of action is preventive, such as having a thorough exam and cleaning done before leaving. If you have painful or trouble areas have them taken care of.
There is a "Travelers Guide to Safe Dental Care" that is accessible from the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures at www.osap.org (716) 754-4883 that you can check out. There are international organizations that could help locate a dentist overseas. One is the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers at www.iamat.org and the American Dental Society of Europe at www.adse.co.uk (011-44-141-331-0088).
