The Government abolishes the scheme soon after being elected in 1996.
"There's a screaming hole here and that's that the Howard Government isn't doing anything to support public dental care," Opposition health spokes woman Julia Gillard said yesterday.
"That's showing now right around the country with about 650,000 Australians on waiting lists, waiting for amazing as basic as dental care."
Ms Gillard said the Federal Government must also fund more dentistry places at universities.
She said it was predict that within four years Australia will be short about 1500 dental care providers, with less than 250 dental students graduating every year
Ms Gillard said a lack of dental care had follow-on health effects.
