BOSTON - About 600,000 people who get their medical care during the state Medicaid program would be appropriate for dental coverage for the first time in four years on Saturday, sparking worry about a shortage of dentists to believe a huge backlog of work.
From July 1, the state would restore dental coverage for adults 21 and older on Medicaid, counting checkups, cleanings, fillings, and also procedures such as root canals and dentures.
Legislators and the management of Gov. W. Mitt Romney made some key changes to hearten more dentists to accept patients on Medicaid, such as capping the number of Medicaid patients they accept.
